In my small group, a few weeks ago we spoke about the glory of GOD and what that looked like and how our life would be forever changed if we had one glimpse of GOD. It was an interesting topic and in the discussion, it was very conclusive that if we could have five minutes with GOD, we would be transformed. We all agreed that having this bit of understanding about HIS Glory would change us for all time. As, the days passed I could not help but think that maybe HIS Glory is all around us and we have not opened our eyes or our hearts enough to see it. The Glory of GOD exists in the teachings of Jesus and the unexplainable truths of this earth.
If you ask most people if they believe in GOD, the answer is more than likely yes. Most people believe in some form of a higher power and some form of creation. The topic of GOD is a distant force that does not tend to offend people. Although, if you pry deeper to the topic of Jesus, you will more than likely hit resistance. Jesus is personal because HE was here on this earth, a fact that is historically proven. Although, to understand GOD we must understand Jesus, for Jesus existed in the beginning with GOD. (John1:2) It seems so easy, but also so complicated to understand the Son of Man. We want to see the Glory and understand GOD, but as I thought about this topic it occurred to me that we might already have the answers. In John, it talks about how the Word (Jesus) came to this earth in human form and made a home among us. (John 1:14) HE was full of unfailing love and faithfulness (or grace and truth in other translations- John 1:14). Per the Book of John, we have seen the Glory of the Father in HIS one and only SON. (John 1:14) Think about all the things you have read in the Word (the Bible) that make no logical sense. Jesus showed love and kindness equally among men and women in a time where that was not done. Jesus performed unexplainable miracle after miracle. HE feed massive amounts of people with nothing. Jesus healed people and raised them from the dead. HIS glory is felt through HIS actions and HIS words. HE explains numerous times that HE is the light and no one can get to the Father except through HIM. HE is the stairway to GOD, but we must believe in HIM. Through Jesus we see kindness and grace in HIS everyday mission. We see remarkable unconditional love by the grace HE gives us through the power of sin that leads to death. (Romans 8:2) If we had any doubt in the Glory of GOD, we can look at Jesus and see it first hand in the Word.
God left us this amazing gift in Jesus even 2,000 years later because Jesus lived as a man on earth and therefore understands what it is like to be human. HE understands temptation, lust, struggles in relationships and what it’s like to go through death. It’s because HE was here that we can go to HIM and give our problems to HIM. Jesus was 100% GOD but also 100% man. We can go to HIM with anything and everyday he gives us our own unique kind of mercy. By the time you retire, GOD through Jesus, has given you mercy and forgiveness at least 23,725 times! (“IF” pg 68, Mark Batterson) It is overwhelming that GOD loves us this much to show us HIS Glory through Jesus.
However, this world can feel lonely because what you read has happened so long ago, that we long for the day that we can see the Glory of God right in front of us. Although, as I thought about it, we can see the Glory of God in simple things, if we pay attention. For example, in every game of baseball a player steps up to the plate and tries to hit a 95mph fast ball in a tenth of second and in every game, it happens. Watching baseball is seeing the impossible become possible. This impossibility and unexplained miracles in life is right in front of our eyes and we fail to see it all the time. There are almost 5,000 chances through baseball alone for us to see the impossible become possible with God, in a single year; yet we pass by it like it’s not even a blimp on our radar. If God can give us a small glimpse into HIS Kingdom in something as simple as a baseball game, then what could we see, if we pay attention? We must be open to the impossible becoming possible though. The other thing I thought that was interesting was, in baseball if you hit the ball 3 out 10 attempts at bat you are considered a successful batter. Can you imagine only succeeding 30% of the time? It’s like failing a test and getting an A. This is one of those things that can only be explained by God because it makes no sense on paper. Just like the healing and miracles Jesus preformed in HIS ministry can only be explained through the Glory of GOD. It’s amazing that with the world we will never be anything, but with God, even with our own uncontrollable sin, you are still loved 100% of the time. In baseball if you rarely hit the ball because of the complexity of the situation, you are still considered successful. God gives us this same chance to be a pillar for HIS glory, a disciple to the world and an eternal kingdom to call home, despite the fact that we fail 100% of the time. The Glory of GOD is simply seeing Jesus’ love, grace and faithfulness in this world.
John goes on to explain that no one has ever seen GOD except the unique one himself who is near the Father’s heart. (John 1:18) Then in the next verse states that HE (Jesus) revealed GOD to us. (John 1:18) If we want to see the Glory of GOD, the Glory that Moses begs for in Exodus, all we need to do is look to Jesus. (Exodus 34:6) It is through HIM that the Glory exists for us to see every day. My prayer is that we all keep reading HIS word and praying fervently to Jesus, for this is the only way to wisdom, glory and true transformation in GOD.
