What does it mean to be "connected" - really connected? Sure we're all "connected" as part of the human race. We're even "connected" in more specific degrees by ethnicity, culture, sub-culture, etc. We're "connected" by education, career, social status & even by electronics & music. Yet none of these things, in or of themselves, will allow any of us to truly know or be known by someone else. None of these things will enable us to love or allow us to be loved. And without love, the most eloquent speaker, the wisest scholar, even the most faithful and humble among us have nothing. (1Cor 13:1-3)
You will never really be able to know what love is until you can accept it unconditionally despite your faults and give it unconditionally despite the faults of others. And you will never even cast a shadow on the threshold of unconditional love until you begin to get to know other people & let them get to know you - the good, the bad and the ugly.
God is Love. (1Joh 4:7-8, 16) God created each of us. (Gen 1:27, Psa 139:13) God knows each of us. (Jer 1:5, Joh 10:14) God desires for each of us, His children, to know & love Him. (Jer 9:23-24; Rom 5:6, 10) God desires for His children to know & love each other. (Joh 13:34, Jam 5:16, 1Joh 4:11) God desires for the un-knowing, un-loving world to recognize His children, and be drawn to Him, by our love for Him & for each other. (Joh 13:35, 17:23; 1Tim 2:3-4; 1Joh 4:12) God desires to be connected with us... and that has nothing to do with our ethnicity, culture, career, social status or electronics. It has everything to do with love.
These are just a few random thoughts on a huge issue, & I'm so grateful to Assoc. Pastor Lee Brown of Harmony Church for taking 5 weeks to put this issue under the microscope and help us to better understand what it means to be truly Connected to Others, especially within the body of Christ. We're only one week into this series, & we've already uncovered that the reason we're wired to be connected and loved in meaningful relationship with others is because we were created by and in the image of a relational God. The next 4 sermons will dig into the What & How of our connections to God and others and hopefully relate enough practical application that everyone can take something away with them. Come find out if there's something for you...
